You weren’t prepared to spend so much time inside my mind, were you? I planned to start or center this post around the following quote:
“What can you do to promote world peace? Go home and love your family.” – Mother Teresa
Well, being the good scholar that I am and not wanting to misquote someone, I set off on a Google search to identify the precise quote and source. Only to find that Mother Teresa, in fact, did not say that at all. The closest quote I can find is:
“Spread love everywhere you go; first of all in your house. Give love to your children, to your wife or husband, to a next door neighbor. Let no one ever come to you without leaving better and happier. Be the living expression of God’s kindness; kindness in your face, kindness in your eyes, kindness in your smile.” – Mother Teresa (as quoted in Worldwide Laws of Life : 200 Eternal Spiritual Principles (1998) by John Templeton, p. 448)
…and that may not be where it originated. That was just the closest I could find as a real quote. Ah well. No matter. The rabbit trails the internet can lead you on.
But I continue to think about the big issues of the day. Most especially, the loss of truth in the public square. Or possibly, the loss of trust? I’m not sure. I wonder what our country will look like in four years. Will we have ripped each other to shreds from disagreement? Will one side or the other prevail in a totalitarian regime? Is there anything I can do to stop or change the advance or course of history? An age-old question.
What efforts are worth my effort? Well, this is where that cute little Mother Teresa quote was going to come in. But I guess it exemplified my problem instead. Either way, I used to think that quote was crazy. If we all stay home, what good will it do? But it is the real good that we must do. We must teach our children to identify truth. Because without truth, we have nothing left.
Truth gives life. We must cling to it.
